Instillation Idea

Iv been inspired by London street art to create a instillation that in not only bright, visually stimulating, aesthetically pleasing and eye catching but also interactive. I would like to have the viewer actively partake in the instillation and feel like they have false control over the outcome of the piece. Ideally I would develop an idea that will genuinely be interactive but due to coding and my skills it might be a bit of a stretch.

Old

The initial idea was to make a projection based instillation that was interactive. Due to my technical skill Iv decided to scrap that and go with something more simplistic and feasible.

I wanted to illustrate and paint a boxed maze, much like Pacman or Snakes and ladders, and have a projection of a small person interacting with the painting as they make there way to the end of the maze. Then I would darken the room and put a circle (spotlight) around the proton of the person so that the projection would black out the wall painting and only show what is in surrounding the person. I got told that it would be similar to the credits to the original Mr Bean or similar to Mario the game ghost levels.

The rout that the person takes will be carefully planned out so that the person interacts with the maze, objects and little monsters that will be hidden in the dark corners/spots of the maze. The little drawings will be a mixture of drawing styles and each one that has its own reaction from the person as they progress though the maze.

New

The new idea is much like the old one but is more doable and relates to the project theme more than the original idea. The new idea is to create a illustrated collection of cartoon character and transfer them onto a white wall. Using a projector I will project animated versions of the characters that will loop (out of sync) every couple of seconds over the top of the wall print. I want the characters to be doing individual looped tasks that relate to movement, journeys, mapping and progression.

I would like to play with opacity and layering so using a projector will allow me to overlay pictures and use moving footage and still images together. Converting illustrations to a painting will be something new and challenging. The scaling and matching up of the projector and wall painting I'm expecting to be difficult, but with trial and error hopefully I can work out a system that will work.

  1. This hasn't moved on from our last conversation as far as I can see. Glad you have sorted the blog out. Looking much better. Tori said she was working with you so I wonder how that is panning out and who is doing what. Let me know when you have updated the blog and I'll have another look. But not long now....
