Idea 8 - Final Digital Film

I wanted to get same effect that physically distressing found footage made so I opted to draw on each frame. Sahir showed me ho to do this in Photoshop so I could export the final video in 300/500fps chunks and put it all together in Final Cut. Like doing it by hand the process is extremely repetitive but unlike doing it by hand its not physically tiring, only mentally exhausting.

Sound has yet to be made.

4th Assignment

UFO

I started by modelling the shape of the disk.

Then I added a sphere, brought it up to size and then selected and deleted half the shape and connected the two meshes making it one object .

I dragged one of the ridges from the top of the disk out through the floor to create the UFO shape I wanted.

I selected only the the dome and smoothed it so that it became more circular.

I also smoothed out the edges so that the sides slide to soft corner.

From here I continued to UV map the UFO.

3rd Assignment

 Asteroid

I started with a sphere.

I used the move tool to select the faces and manipulate them to make the desired astroid shape.

Once I was happy with the shape I smoothed the astroid and got a image from google that would create the astroids look.

I then UV-mapped the astroid with the photo to create the finished product.

Planet

I made a planet like shape in

Once I was happy with the shape I exported it and opened it in Maya.

I combined it with a sphere to be able to imprint the texture.

I then UV mapped the planet to add even more texture.

2nd Assignment

UV-map

In photoshop I chose the colours and design that I wanted the spaceship to be and exported the image and brought it into Maya.

For some reason the opacity was faint causing the spaceship to become clear with a hint of the colours.

I decided to fill in the faces with colour and textures in Maya rather than getting a image from the internet.

1st Assignment

Spaceship

First I made a cube and used the extrude tool and the move tool to create vague details like wings, a cabin and fins.

Then I use the extrude tool to create jet holes and smoothed the spaceship.

I wasn't happy with the shape of the ship so I went back a couple of steps and made the wings thicker with more shape and added a big middle fin.

Because I didn't join the wings and the fin to the hub after I when back and edited them the final product has a slight dip were the wings connect to the hub and fins.

In my personal opinion I like it looking boxy like a 90's futuristic space game.

I didn't like the effect that UV mapping gave so I decided to fill in the colour using the paint tool.

Idea 7 - Final Physical Film

I scratched into strips of 8mm scrap footage that I liked, using pens and sharp tools to distress the image. The action was tedious and repetitive but some how relaxing, a bit like mindless colouring or knitting. It was very difficult to see what I was doing until the sequence gets played because the strips are so small. I also found it hard to organise the clips as I cant see what was on them at first glance.

Idea 6 - Final Thaumatrope (Flashing Images)

(WARNING this post has flashing images)

I'm making my own digital thaumatrope, I'm going to have 4 pictures to make 4 digital thaumatropes. 4 print outs as well as 4 gifs to show on screen how the illusion works.

I started with a picture of Clint Eastwood and removed the background, then I sharpened the image, turned it into black and white and applied a dot effect.

Clint Eastwood Effects

I made and chose 3 images that I wanted to combine with my final edited Clint Eastwood newspaper style floating head. Im going to pair the final 4 images with each other to see the different combinations.

Final Design 1

I wanted to see if I could have the shadow and detail on one side and colour on the other side, so I added an effect to the sharpened image. The contrast isn't as drastic as I would have liked, so I'm going to try to leave more white space to infuse the difference in pictures.

Final Design 2

I wanted to add brighter colours, more texture and create more of a contrast with each side of the thaumatrope, so I got a collection of brush strokes and overlapped them to mach the positioning on thaumatrope 1. I wanted it to look like poorly applied make-up when it mixes with the other picture, but I ended up leaving it abstract after looking at work from Damien Hirst and Andrew Salgado. Personally this design is my favourite out of the 3.

Final Design 3

This is an image of a skull I found on google, I wanted to see how it would look with the thaumatrope 1 design.

Final Design 4

To make a digital version of a thaumatrope I've made the 4 images into gifs that flash at a fast rate between 2 images, thus merging them.
